Trading Like W D Gann

Why Collate the Historical Price Data for WD Gann’s Lessons?

William Delbert Gann wrote many courses that are hard to study without complete chart data to enable seeing and understanding the trading methods he described in his numerous lessons in context, among them commodities like Eggs, Cotton, Rye and Soybeans, along with companies like Auburn Automotive Company, Chrysler Corporation (“Chrysler Motors”), General Motors, Studebaker Automobile Company, Wright Aeronautical Corporation and United States Steel Company ("US Steel"). W D Gann provided his students with charts for his lessons, but those charts are no longer available.

But just having the market data described by W D Gann is often not sufficient to extract exactly what Gann was seeing and doing to fully understand his trading methodology. Rising to this challenge, Timothy Walker (click here) devoted countless hours to unravelling Gann’s lessons and shares the insight gained in two excellent published studies of Gann’s trading methods:

  • “How to Trade Like W D Gann” (click here) describing 322 US Steel trades undertaken sequentially between 1915 and 1931 as originally detailed by W D Gann in his Mechanical Method of Trading lesson.

  • “How to Trade Like W D Gann II” (click here) describes W D Gann’s trades in Chrysler Motors, Cotton, Eggs, Rye and Soybeans undertaken between 1925 and 1954.

Both of Tim’s books can be purchased through the Inspired by Gann (click here).

The “US Steel Historical Data Set” (click here) and “How to Trade Like W D Gann II, Companion Data Set” contain the market data sets for the lessons described in both of Tim’s books and they are available from this web site.

The Historical Price Data Set compilations provide those studying WD Gann’s lessons, and Timothy’s analysis, the price and volume data necessary to study Gann’s lesson in context within their favourite market analysis software, and to extrapolate those trading methodologies to the present time.

This prompted the Auld Tyma to go on a search for the market data. This meant searching back through the financial pages of the New York Times newspaper, and where that did not have the required information or it was unreadable, the Wall Street Journal, the Chicago Daily Tribune and other newspapers through the period 1901 to 1995.
