W D Gann wrote many courses that are hard to study without complete chart data to enable seeing his descriptions in context, the United States Steel Company ("US Steel") lesson among them.

Timothy Walker (Click here)  published an excellent study “How to Trade Like W D Gann” describing 322 US Steel trades undertaken sequentially between 1915 and 1931 as originally detailed by W D Gann in his Mechanical Method of Trading lesson.

This US Steel Historical Price Data compilation provides those studying WD Gann’s US Steel lesson, and Timothy’s analysis, the price and volume data necessary to study Gann’s lesson, in context within their favourite market analysis software and to extrapolate those trading methodologies to the present time.

This prompted the Auld Tyma to go on a search for the US Steel market data. This meant searching back through the financial pages of the New York Times newspaper, and where that did not have the required information or was unreadable, the Wall Street Journal and other newspapers through the period 1901 to 1995.  

The US Steel Historical Data ZIPped package comprises 5 files:

• US Steel Company, Stock Market Data Notes.pdf – notes explaining the source of the data and any adjustments made thereto.
• US Steel Prices 1901-1995 'As Reported'.csv – data as recorded directly from the newspapers without any adjustments.
• US Steel Prices 1901-1995 'Inferred Open'.csv – Open prices were not reported after 2 October 1972 so have been inferred (see accompanying US Steel Company, Stock Market Data Notes file).
• US Steel Prices 1901-1995 Inferred Open, Stock Split Adjusted.csv – price have been adjusted for stock splits.
• US Steel Comments 1901-1995.csv – informative comments related to particular trading days.

 All the Auld Tyma Chart Data is contained in a compressed ZIP file that will need to be extracted before use.

Depending on the market  covered, the ZIP file may contain a number of CSV files (with various aggregation assumptions), along with a PDF document explaining the content of the CSV files.

On first opening the files may generate a Security warning - acknowledge the warning to allow the file to open.

Combining the US Steel Historical Price Data with that available since 1995 from market analysis software enables creation of a complete US Steel data set from 1901 to the present.
